Rangers tipped for ‘extraordinary’ Jose Mourinho hire, agent talks underway amid Russell Martin sack news

Rangers could once again be on the hunt for a new manager sooner rather than later.

The Gers were humiliated on Wednesday as they crashed out of the Champions League in a 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge.

It was an embarrassing display, with Russell Martin now under heavy pressure at Rangers already.

Despite only being appointed this summer, the former Scottish international is at serious risk of the sack.

As a result, names are starting to be linked to Ibrox, including Jose Mourinho.

Kevin Hatchard: Rangers job would appeal to Jose Mourinho

Despite the discontent of the Ibrox faithful, Martin is set to be in charge of Rangers for the Old Firm derby on the weekend.

However, how long the 39-year-old can last in Glasgow if poor results continue remains to be seen.

One manager who did leave his post this week was Mourinho. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss was at Turkish outfit Fenerbahce until the two parties parted ways after their Champions League exit.

As a result, it hasn’t taken long for the 62-year-old to be linked with job in the UK, including the post at Rangers.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 29 August, Alan Brazil said: “His agents right away will be talking to clubs in England, or anywhere in the world, Jose is Jose. He is not scared of any job.”

He later added: “And with Jose’s cheeky smile and grin, would he go to Rangers?”

Kevin Hatchard then replied “What would appeal to him is the challenge of getting Rangers back to where they feel they belong.

“The passion, could you imagine him at Ibrox, that would be extraordinary.

“Obviously, Fenerbahce played Rangers last season, and I think that kind of job would appeal to him.”

Rangers against the clock to appoint Jose Mourinho

There is no doubt that Mourinho is going to be in demand over the coming weeks.

In the Premier League alone, there are multiple jobs that could become available sooner rather than later, with West Ham and Nottingham Forest being the most obvious ones.

Therefore, if Rangers want to bring in the 62-year-old, they must act fast and sack Martin before the Portuguese manager is snapped up.

If another heavy defeat follows in the Old Firm derby on Sunday, Martin simply must be sacked, with Mourinho brought in to undo the 39-year-old’s mess at Ibrox.
