Barry Ferguson says Rangers have a ‘huge talent’ who can become a ‘top international midfielder’

Nicolas Raskin has been one of Rangers’ most consistent players in the couple of years.

However, after a turbulent summer, the Belgium international could be saying goodbye to Ibrox.

With rumours stating Raskin has fallen out with Russell Martin, Wolves are among a host of clubs interested in him.

Despite the exit rumours, former interim boss Barry Ferguson has stated how influential Raskin could be for any club.

Barry Ferguson full of praise for Nicolas Raskin

In his column for the Daily Record, Ferguson wrote: “I’ve heard the same rumours of a fallout with Russell Martin and whispers of a potential move away from Ibrox.

“But I’ll be honest, I have no idea how much – if any – of it is true.”

Raskin has been dropped in three of Rangers‘ games this season, most notably being named as a substitute for the second leg of their Champions League Qualifier against Club Brugge.

Rangers subsequently lost 6-0 against Brugge, heaping more and more pressure on Russell Martin.

Whilst Raskin did come on to play the second half, Ferguson’s words of praise suggest that Raskin should be one of Rangers’ star players.

“What I do know for definite, however, is that Nico is a huge talent with the potential to by a top international midfielder.

“I felt we managed to get the very best out of him during my spell in charge last season and his reward was a place in the Belgium team.”

Ferguson became interim boss in February and remained so until the end of last season.

Russell Martin under immense scrutiny ahead of Old Firm derby

If Rangers were performing well and playing free-flowing football under Martin then there would be less of an issue surrounding Raskin.

However, quite simply aren’t, and this has led to heightened attention as to why Martin doesn’t trust Raskin.

Rangers still need to do business before the transfer window shuts, and with a striker desperately needed, Bojan Miovski looks set to replace the departing Hamza Igamane.

Rangers have drawn all three of their Scottish Premiership games so far, already trailing Celtic by six points.

After their trouncing to Club Brugge, Martin won’t be able to give Ibrox Champions League football, and they’ll have to settle for the Europa League instead.

Up next is the first Old Firm derby of the season, as Celtic look to build an even bigger gap over their arch-rivals.

Should Rangers lose that match, Martin may not last another month in charge, as more fans continue to campaign for his exit.
