Patrick Stewart commits ‘sackable offence’ as result of Russell Martin talks emerge at Rangers
Patrick Stewart could now find himself in the firing line after Rangers were humiliated in their Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge.
The Gers were defeated 6-0 in the second leg on Wednesday night, resulting in a catastrophic 9-1 loss to the Belgian outfit on aggregate.
Russell Martin’s Rangers side turned in another abject display versus Club Brugge, which has only served to heap further pressure on the boss after a dismal start to the campaign.
Things are far from right at Ibrox, and now the attention could also turn towards Stewart and the rest of the hierarchy.

Russell Martin doesn’t fear for his job after Patrick Stewart talks
Pressure has been mounting on Martin since his early weeks at Rangers, and things could now be about to come to a head after their exit from Champions League qualifying.
The Govan outfit have a proud history in the competition, but were dumped out with a whimper, and there are now huge fears surrounding Sunday’s Old Firm Derby.
Their latest defeat has raised the scrutiny on Martin’s position even further, but there have also been calls for people higher up the ladder at Ibrox to take responsibility for the recent debacle as well.
- Martin has won just three of his opening 10 games as Rangers boss
- One of those victories came against Alloa in the Premier Sports Cup
- Rangers are winless in their first three league games for the first time since 1989
Martin revealed in his post-match interview with TNT Sports that he doesn’t fear for his job, and has already held talks with chief executive Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell.
“No (I don’t fear losing my job). Patrick (Stewart) and Kevin (Thelwell), I’ve had a chat with them already. They’re amazingly supportive.
“They understand that this might take time, and they knew that before we came in.
“They understand the club’s position and where we’re at, and now all the focus is on Sunday.”
The 39-year-old’s comments have placed understandable scrutiny on Stewart and Thelwell, and Herald journalist Mark McDougall took to his X account to suggest that the stance from the pair is a “sackable offence” for them too.
Rangers should never have appointed Russell Martin
Rangers took a risk by appointing Martin, and they should have paid more attention to the previous evidence which suggested what was to come.
The former Southampton boss has proven in his previous jobs that he is stubborn and unwavering in his style of play, which in itself often has calamitous consequences for his teams.
He has already shown that he has no plan B, and that is resulting in Rangers consistently being on the wrong end of embarrassing and comical moments within games.
His appointment is turning into a costly error from the hierarchy, and it is entirely possible that there are more than just Martin who could pay with their jobs at Ibrox.
