Chris Sutton mocks Rangers despite Celtic’s Champions League humiliation the night before

Rangers suffered a humiliating night at the hands of Club Brugge on Wednesday.

Russell Martin’s side were dumped out of the Champions League in the most embarrassing fashion, losing 6-1 on the night and 9-1 on aggregate.

After eight minutes, they were a goal down and a player down, as Max Aarons was sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Club Brugge then turned on the style, racing into a 5-0 lead at half-time. By this point, the jokes were already being aimed at Rangers on social media.

Jokes made at Rangers expense as they are dumped out of the Champions League

It was a shameful performance from Rangers. Only their goalkeeper Jack Butland came out of the game with any credit.

Their manager Martin was already facing calls for the sack before this game. The pressure on him is now reaching fever pitch ahead of the Old Firm Derby on Sunday.

That didn’t stop anyone associated with Celtic making jokes at Rangers expense.

Chris Sutton, who played for Celtic in the mid-2000s, made a sarcastic tweet at half-time, suggesting he didn’t think Rangers would get back in the game.

The BBC pundit can now pat himself on the back for actually getting a prediction right.

Rangers can still get a result in the Old Firm derby

Any Celtic fan laughing at Rangers on social media tonight must be papering over their own embarrassment.

After all, they were knocked out of the Champions League at the same stage just 24 hours earlier, but in a much easier tie.

They failed to score in 180 minutes against Kairat, the champions of Kazakhstan. They now fall into the Europa League alongside Rangers.

Both results say a lot about the strength of Scottish football right now. It’s in the gutter. These results will harm the league’s coefficient, meaning it could be even harder to qualify for the Champions League in future.

As woeful as Rangers performed on Wednesday, their squad isn’t that far behind Celtic on paper.

Over the course of 90 minutes, with a sold-out Ibrox roaring them on, it’s entirely possible that they can turn this Celtic team over.

Of course, they’ll need to play a lot better than they did on this shameful night in Bruges.
