Chris Mepham medical booked after Rangers speculation as Ibrox ready for late summer arrivals
Rangers are looking for a new defender ahead of the transfer deadline and Bournemouth centre-back Chris Mepham’s name had been mentioned.
Mepham is linked with a Bournemouth exit and his deal at the Vitality Stadium runs out in the summer of 2026.
Rangers were keen on Conor Coady as well, but he ended up joining Wrexham, so a move to Ibrox is not on the cards this summer.
Despite Nasser Djiga moving to Ibrox in this window, Russell Martin is understood to still be keen on bolstering his defence before the transfer deadline.

Chris Mepham agrees West Brom transfer
Mepham is now not expected to move to Gers this summer as he’s agreed a deal to join West Brom.
The English championship outfit have reached an agreement with Cherries over a transfer fee.
Fabrizio Romano reported on 27 August that he’s even agreed terms with the Baggies and will undergo his medical shortly.
This saw a Gers fan ask Stevie Clifford from Four Lads Had a Dream about the Ibrox outfit’s pursuit of the 27-year-old.
He claimed that Rangers were never interested in signing the Wales international in the first place.
Rangers need to sign a defender better than Chris Mepham
Rangers must target a defender superior to Mepham if they aim to clinch the Scottish Premiership, as his inconsistent performances and limited impact highlight the need for a higher-calibre option.
Mepham has struggled for regular minutes at Bournemouth and lacks the commanding presence required to anchor a title-chasing defence
Mepham | Player | Davies |
38 | Games | 35 |
54 | Tackles won | 22 |
112 | Duels won | 221 |
35 | Interceptions | 17 |
To surpass rivals like Celtic, Gers need a centre-back with proven leadership, aerial dominance and ball-playing ability – qualities Mepham has not consistently shown in the Premier League.
Investing in a top-tier defender, potentially using funds from Hamza Igamane’s £10.4million sale, would bolster Rangers’ backline, reduce defensive errors and provide the stability needed to challenge for the title under Martin’s high-pressing system.
