49ers told they risk ‘ridiculous’ Russell Martin call at Rangers amid £15m development

Rangers have had an abysmal start to the season under new boss Russell Martin.

Rangers are winless in the Scottish Premiership after three games, and are on the on the brink of Champions League elimination after a 3-1 defeat on home soil against Club Brugge.

Martin is already facing immense pressure at Rangers from fans, yet former Light Blues left-back Andy Halliday has a strong belief over how the 49ers will view Martin’s future.

Halliday gives insight into 49ers mindset

In response to a caller on Clyde SSB, Halliday said: “I don’t agree with the fact that 100 per cent of the fans have turned against him, which I think was the exact statement that the caller used.

“The 49ers aren’t going to sack Russell Martin after eight weeks. It would be ridiculous, especially after you’ve given him £15million plus to go and assemble a squad of players.”

Russell Martin has overseen a huge overhaul of the Rangers squad, with 11 new arrivals and 13 players leaving.

Despite this, Halliday has clearly not seen enough from this Rangers side to fill him with any confidence.

“I was also someone that was champing at the bit for a Russell Martin to come in the door because of his style of play, because his identity. But, and I stress, I expected more earlier than I am now,” he added.

With 49ers president Paraag Marathe and co. spending so heavily this summer, Martin needs to start improving quickly as a huge week in Rangers’ season approaches already.

Igamane news leave Rangers needing more firepower

Hamza Igamane is nearing a £10.5m move to Lille, with Rangers hoping that the transfer saga is now finally over.

Having not come on as a substitute in Rangers’ 1-1 draw with St. Mirren, the 22-year-old striker is set to depart Ibrox just a year after joining.

Rangers are now in the hunt for a striker that can change their poor form, with Bojan Miovski seemingly a main target.

The North Macedonian forward enjoyed a strong spell in the Scottish Premiership while at Aberdeen, scoring 44 goals in 98 appearances, before moving to Spanish side Girona.

Miovski would cost Rangers around the £7m mark, with Girona looking to make a profit on the 26-year-old.
