Kris Boyd makes Jermain Defoe point as Rangers urged to sign 237-goal striker

Rangers could do worse than get someone like Jermain Defoe back to Ibrox.

Hamza Igamane’s tantrum against St Mirren in the William Hill Premiership on 24 August has left his future uncertain in G51 as he refused to come on as a substitute due to an apparent injury.

The Gers will certainly need to look for a replacement if the Morocco international were to leave in the ongoing transfer window.

LOSC Lille have resumed talks for Igamane, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him depart before 1 September, but that shouldn’t happen before reinforcements arrive.

Rangers should pursue Jamie Vardy transfer

Jamie Vardy should be someone the Gers look to bolster their attack this summer, Kris Boyd says.

The Scotsman is confused as to why neither of the Old Firm clubs have pounced on the former Leicester City striker’s signature.

Boyd compared the 38-year-old to Defoe, who spent three successful seasons at Ibrox and won the William Hill Premiership title.

Speaking on Go Ballistic on 25 August, the ex-Scotland international said: “I think the Vardy one is interesting as well. He’s been linked with both clubs. I don’t understand why neither of them would just go and get someone you know is going to score goals, you know, is at a stage in his career where he needs to be playing.

“So he’s going to give you everything to make sure he’s a success. And also, he wouldn’t want to join a long list of players who have come up here towards the end of their career from England and failed. He will look at it, saying, ‘I can get 20 to 25 goals’. Similar to Defoe.”

Jamie Vardy vs Jermain Defoe: What could ex-Leicester City striker bring to Ibrox?

Vardy could move to Ibrox as a free agent beyond Deadline Day, leaving the door open for the Gers to make a late move.

The veteran striker has scored 237 goals throughout his career, starting from his non-league footballing days at Halifax Town.

After impressing in the EFL Championship with Leicester, the Englishman went on to win the Premier League title with the Foxes in 2016, in what was a fairytale season in the East Midlands.

Rangers will have to compete with Celtic for Vardy, and whoever gets him will have a reliable goalscorer on their hands.

Defoe was of a similar ilk and continued to find the back of the net consistently for Sunderland in his mid-30s before signing for Bournemouth and eventually moving to Glasgow, with the 42-year-old ending his career with 305 goals over a 22-year period.

While the former Tottenham centre-forward caught the attention at an early age, Vardy was a late bloomer and can still probably make an impact in Scotland’s top flight.
