Kris Boyd slams ‘ludicrous’ Russell Martin claims at Rangers, but things could change next week

Russell Martin could potentially soon be facing the full wrath of the Ibrox faithful at Rangers.

The Gers are coming off a 3-1 loss to Club Brugge in the first leg of the Champions League play-off and will face St Mirren in the William Hill Premiership next on 24 August.

Martin’s tenure at Ibrox is already facing scrutiny, and supporters may start to demand the manager’s sacking already if things don’t change.

The former Southampton boss has a crucial week coming up, both domestically and in Europe, which could possibly make or break his stint in G51.

Russell Martin could face real problems at Rangers with Celtic loss

It’s “ludicrous” to suggest Martin is already fighting for his job at the Gers, Kris Boyd says.

But the former Scottish forward believes things may get challenging for the 39-year-old head coach if the upcoming results, including against Celtic at Ibrox on 31 August, don’t go to plan.

Boyd feels the ex-Saints boss could potentially be facing “real problems” at the Glaswegian outfit by the end of next week, despite only a few games being played so far under the new management.

Boyd wrote in The Scottish Sun on 22 August: “Look, it’s still early days for Martin. It’s ludicrous to even suggest he’s already fighting to save his job after only a few games.

“But if we fast-forward to next Sunday and Rangers have lost to Celtic in the first Old Firm game, after losing to Brugge, and dropping points to St Mirren, then the pressure he’s feeling right now will be nothing to what it’s likely to be then. He’ll be facing real problems should that unfold.”

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises could face Russell Martin sack pressure

While some feel Martin needs time at Ibrox to implement his ideas, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises will ultimately be the judge and jury at the Gers.

The US consortium promised significant changes at the Light Blues when taking over from the previous ownership and have put their money where their mouth is this summer by making a significant investment in the team.

While the Glaswegian outfit arguably still need many pieces to build a competitive squad in G51, the Americans have made a start in the ongoing transfer window.

Rangers fans seem to have had enough of Martin after seeing their team’s performances at the start of the season, but the decision to change the manager will eventually fall on the new owners.

Cavenagh and the 49ers might have complete faith in the Scottish head coach, but if the supporters start turning en masse, they may have no choice but to take drastic measures.

Martin’s appointment looked uninspiring to the Ibrox faithful, and the recent displays have proved them right, leading to an air of negativity in G51 that could potentially have grave consequences.
