How much money Rangers have lost on Ben Davies as exit announcement made

Ben Davies has completed a loan move to Oxford United, which will spell the end of his time at Ibrox.

Davies has just 12 months remaining on his Rangers contract and will become a free agent at the end of his loan move.

Davies signed for Gers in 2022, having made zero Premier League appearances for Liverpool following a strange £4million move from Preston.

His time in Glasgow has been awful, and he has never been able to find his feet in his four years.

Rangers have wasted £4.2million in wages on Ben Davies

Davies is the second-highest paid player for Rangers on £27,000 a week.

James Tavernier is the highest paid at Ibrox, with a weekly wage of £30,000.

When you add up his wages throughout his three years in Scotland, and add it to the £4million they paid for the defender’s services, that equates to £8.2million wasted, not counting his spell at Birmingham.

The Gers will be disappointed not to be getting a fee for the defender, but a loan move will still save them plenty of money, just as it did last season.

Oxford’s highest-paid player is Cameron Brannagan, who is on £14,000 per week, so it is unlikely that they will be covering all of Davies’ wages.

The defender may be taking a wage cut in the move, but if not, the Light Blues will likely be paying around £13,000 a week in wages for the 30-year-old.

This still equates to £675,000 that Gers will be missing out on, which could have gone on signing another player.

Russell Martin still must address his defensive issues

Martin brought in Nasser Djiga to add to his defence.

However, Rangers supporters will be glad they aren’t wasting as much money as they have done with Davies on the Wolves loanee.

The 22-year-old had a disaster in defence in the 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge and has struggled to settle in.

Defence is still a major issue for Martin, and if he continues to waste money like previous managers have, he will be gone in no time.
