‘Russell Martin faces Rangers sack already, it’s time for Andrew Cavenagh to show his mettle’
Andrew Cavenagh already has the chance to pull the plug on Russell Martin at Rangers.
Martin, 39, only joined Rangers in June, but could already be out the door at Ibrox after a turbulent two months at the helm.
The Englishman has overseen frustrating draws in the Scottish Premiership against Dundee and Motherwell, with progress in the Champions League being the only true plus point to his tenure.
It is fair to say that the bubble has now burst for the former Southampton boss after a 3-1 defeat against Club Brugge in the first leg of the final qualification clash.
The boos of the Govan crowd sum up the general feeling around the Gers right now, handing Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers the ideal opportunity to showcase their winning mentality.

Russell Martin could face Rangers sack already
The early mistake from Nasser Djiga against Club Brugge just sums up the annoyance of the Bears’ fans at such an early stage of the campaign.
This once again makes Rangers the laughing stocks of European and Scottish football and that can’t continue.
Without Danilo’s goal early in the second, there wouldn’t be anything for supporters to even take away with them from Govan.
With that being said, it didn’t prove to add much by the way of positivity as the experience of the Belgian outfit ultimately prevailed in G51.
- Romeo Vermant scored for Club Brugge after just three minutes
- Jorne Spileers and Brandon Mechele made it 3-0 within 20 minutes
- Danilo scored to make it 3-1 early in the second half
This will see the Light Blues miss out on the financial boost of the Champions League, once again featuring in the Europa League, as they did last year under Philippe Clement.
After the failings of the Belgian throughout his tenure in charge, those mistakes can’t be mirrored if the US investors want to be viewed favourably.
As a result, an early sacking could prove to be the perfect way for Cavenagh to stamp his authority and show what Rangers are about under his leadership.

Andrew Cavenagh has chance to make amends
It is fair to say that the vast majority of supporters weren’t sold on Martin when he was named as head coach after months of searching.
The appointment of the ex-Southampton boss ended any links to Davide Ancelotti, who now finds himself in charge of Botafogo in Brazil.
Hiring the Italian would have represented a new direction for the Light Blues as opposed to more of the same under the Englishman, after the temporary reign of Barry Ferguson.
With the Gers already dropping behind Celtic in the title race and now out of Europe’s elite competition, there is little reason not to make an early change.
Position | Games played | Goal difference | Points |
1. | 2 | +3 | 6 |
2. | 2 | +3 | 6 |
3. | 2 | +2 | 4 |
4. | 2 | +1 | 4 |
5. | 2 | 0 | 2 |
6. | 2 | 0 | 2 |
This could see Cavenagh, Paraag Marathe and Co. show their mettle and prove that they aren’t messing around at Rangers after years of being a laughing stock in Scottish football.
