Djeidi Gassama concern raised by Ferguson after what he spotted up close

Djeidi Gassama is the early favourite to be named signing of the summer for Rangers.

French winger Gassama joins Rangers from Sheffield Wednesday for £2.2million, and has got his season off to a flyer in a Rangers shirt.

He has been particularly impressive in the Champions League, scoring in both legs of the second qualifying round tie against Panathinaikos, then hitting a brace in the third round against Viktoria Plzen.

Gassama can be a real game-changer with his lightning pace and keen eye for goal.

Although he’s started some games on the substitutes’ bench, he currently looks like Rangers’ main goal threat every time he’s on the pitch.

Ferguson reveals Gassama concern after Viktoria Plzen second leg

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson is a huge admirer of Gassama.

However, in an exclusive interview with Ibrox News, he revealed that he was noticed in the winger’s style of play after watching him up close against Viktoria Plzen.

He said: “He’s a player who gets fans excited and has certainly hit the ground running. It was strange watching him against Plzen, though, because for the first time he didn’t look positive – he was playing it safe, which is likely down to the manager.

“Hopefully there’s no more of that. As long as he’s given the freedom to express himself, he’ll become a real fan favourite.”

Gassama has been at the heart of Rangers’ best football this season

Rangers’ best football of the season so far has come in the home legs of their Champions League qualifiers.

In those games, they destroyed Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen with fast-paced counter-attacks to take unassailable leads into the return legs.

This type of direct and electric football gets the fans on their feet. It’s a bit different from the tippy-tappy possession-based football that Martin is known for, but it has proved effective in these games at least.

Gassama is the perfect player to have on the pitch if you want to hurt opponents with these electric counter-attacks.

Most football fans want to see their team showing urgency in attack, rather than a slow and patient approach.

So, if Gassama is being instructed to dilute his direct style of play, fans will soon notice, and they won’t be happy.
