Rangers have ‘absolute nightmare’ as pressure on Russell Martin already

Rangers haven’t helped themselves ahead of their Scottish Premiership tie against St Mirren.

Russell Martin’s team face Alloa Athletic in the Scottish League Cup on 16 August before returning to domestic action at the SMISA Stadium.

The Gers are winless in the league, and the trip to Paisley will arguably be a must-win, with the Scottish manager seemingly under pressure at Ibrox already.

While the Light Blues were looking to postpone their game against the Saints, the match is expected to go ahead on 24 August, which hasn’t painted the Glaswegian outfit in the best of lights.

St Mirren shows Rangers indecisiveness

It was a mistake on the Gers part for letting everyone know they were thinking about moving the St Mirren fixture in the Scottish Premiership, Michael Gannon says.

The Daily Record journalist believes that the Light Blues have had an “absolute nightmare” with the situation after backtracking from their request.

Gannon feels the Ibrox hierarchy have made it even more difficult for themselves as they go to Paisley with a point to prove.

Martin’s record at the Gers this season

Speaking on Game On on 15 August, the Scottish journalist said: “I think they’ve had an absolute nightmare over this whole thing. I think the decision to make it known that they were even thinking about cancelling the game was a mistake, this time of the season, when they need games to get up to speed.

“I think having reversed it, it looks weak and willy-nilly and indecisive. What they’ve done is put major pressure on that game as well.”

Martin should be wary at Ibrox due to St Mirren record

Dropping points against Motherwell and Dundee in the first two Scottish Premiership fixtures has left the Gers four points behind Celtic.

Martin was expected to bridge the gap with the Old Firm rivals when he was first appointed, but the Light Blues now have a massive task on their hands.

With a tough test against Club Brugge in the Champions League sandwiched in between the Alloa and St Mirren matches, the former Southampton boss will undoubtedly need every player in his squad to contribute.

Rangers drew against Stephen Robinson’s team in April, with the Saints beating the Gers in the other two ties last season.

The Light Blues lost 2-1 in December 2024, while St Mirren beat them 2-0 at Ibrox in February.

Martin will be expected to change the recent trend of results between the two teams, and anything less than a win will only lead to more questions about the Scottish manager in G51.
