Rangers table Pierce Charles bid as Sheffield Wednesday saga takes another twist

Rangers seem to believe that Pierce Charles is the answer to their goalkeeping woes this summer.

The Sheffield Wednesday stopper has emerged as a contender to take over from Jack Butland between the sticks at Ibrox.

Russell Martin wants his goalkeeper to be comfortable playing the ball out from the back, and the ex-England international struggles with that.

He may be the perfect solution, and his remarkable performance on the Championship’s opening weekend has put Rangers on notice to sign Charles.

Rangers launch Charles offensive amid Sheffield Wednesday chaos

Rangers have already signed Djeidi Gassama from the crisis-ridden club, and they could have done it again with Charles.

Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath reported on 14 August that both the Gers and West Ham have made bids of over £1million for the stopper.

However, he stated that the deals are off because the Championship club did not respond to the offers, which could go a long way to paying wages to the staff at Hillsborough.

Charles silence should not put Rangers off

The Light Blues should keep pushing for a deal for Charles; the chaos at Wednesday will surely make them listen if a bid is high enough.

If the right amount of money is on the table, then surely the second-tier outfit will have to accept, as they cannot even pay their players on time at the moment.

The Bears are already four points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, so they need to do something magical in the transfer window if they are to catch up anytime soon.

Sealing a deal for the promising keeper could be the tonic that Martin’s side needs to revive their fortunes, as it is clearly not working out with Butland, as he makes far too many mistakes for a possession-based side to rely on him.

The young ace broke into the Owl’s first team towards the end of last season, conceding 10 goals in eight matches, but his passing accuracy may be what piques Martin’s interest as he looks for a new number one.

He recorded a 76.3 per cent accuracy, which is better than Butland’s 73.3 per cent that he managed in the last campaign.

The Gers should be first in line to pick up Charles, if he becomes available, just like they did with Gassama.
