Andy Irving ‘to follow in John Souttar’s footsteps’ amid Rangers developments
Rangers have been linked with a move to sign West Ham United’s Andy Irving this summer.
Russell Martin will have been pleased with the transfer business done by Rangers this summer, though recent results may have put an entirely different spin on things.
Rangers’ recent 1-1 draw to Dundee FC meant that Martin is still searching for his first league win as Rangers boss, amplifying the need for more reinforcements.
Now, the Gers are said to have identified Irving as a potential target, and the midfielder could be set to follow a similar route to that of John Souttar.

Irving could become the latest star to represent Hearts and Rangers
It has been reported by The Scotsman (12 August) that Rangers are looking into a deal to bring Irving to Ibrox, with Celtic, Stuttgart and FC Koln also credited with an interest.
Currently at West Ham, the 25-year-old made 61 appearances for Hearts before leaving Scotland for a new adventure back in 2021, but a return could be on the cards.
- Made Hearts debut in 2018
- Went on to make 61 first-team appearances
- After two years abroad, joined West Ham
- Just 11 appearances for the Irons
Irving would be one of many players to have represented both Hearts and Rangers in their career, with Souttar, Barrie McKay and Lee Wallace also doing the same.
The Hammers midfielder is said to be keen on enhancing his chances of featuring in next year’s World Cup with Scotland, and a move to Rangers could help him achieve that goal.

Where else do Rangers need to strengthen?
Before any other consideration is made, it is crucial that Rangers sign a new centre-forward this summer, especially after the disastrous display from Cyriel Dessers against Dundee.
The Light Blues have bolstered their creative outlets with the addition of Djeidi Gassama, Mikey Moore and Oliver Antman, but lack the clinical finisher who is capable of finishing off the move.
If Martin is to succeed in Glasgow, that needs to be addressed.
