Ally McCoist wowed by Celtic after ‘shocking’ Rangers recruitment at Ibrox

Rangers already have work to do to make ground on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Russell Martin’s side salvaged a 1-1 draw against Dundee thanks to a late James Tavernier penalty.

The result means that the Gers have only gathered two points in the league, having drawn with Motherwell in their opening game at Fir Park.

Now, Ally McCoist has lauded rivals Celtic after slamming recruitment at the Ibrox club.

McCoist hits out at Rangers recruitment of the past

Djeidi Gassama has made an instant impact for Rangers and is an example of positive transfer business at Ibrox.

The winger was signed from Sheffield Wednesday and has delivered several goals in the Champions League.

Indeed, there has been a significant influx of players at the Glasgow club as they strive to close the gap on Celtic.

Last season, the Bhoys finished the season 17 points ahead of the Light Blues, and this term has started in the same vein.

Celtic have won both of their league games so far, meaning they already have a four-point cushion.

Gabby Agbonlahor asked McCoist if the Rangers fans would have to be patient this season, while speaking live on talkSPORT (12 August, 06:44 am).

McCoist said: “Well, they’ve got to give him time, that’s no doubt, he’s got to get his new players in.

“The first thing I’ve got to say is recruitment recently, when I say recently, I don’t mean Russell Martin’s tenure because it’s far too early to judge, recruitment’s not been good enough, recruitment’s been shocking, effectively.

“What’s highlighted that Gabby, is that recruitment across the city has been very, very good.

“Recruitment at Celtic, you know, particularly under Big Ange, he brought a couple of the Japanese lads in, they’ve been excellent, excellent, terrific.”

Martin must be given time to turn things around at Ibrox

Rangers face Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League, and Martin will want his team to make amends for their domestic mishaps.

Of course, it would be silly to suggest that the Bears have surrendered the title already, but the last thing they want is to play catch-up.

So far, the Glasgow club have shown promise and inconsistency, meaning Martin must be afforded time to stamp his mark on his squad.

There is still plenty of time to sign new players, and on current evidence, business has been encouraging.

Only time will tell, but recruitment seems to have been a step up from previous transfer windows.
