Michael Stewart hits out over footage of Rangers incident he saw in 1-1 draw vs Dundee

Michael Stewart was left unimpressed as Rangers fell to a draw against Dundee on Saturday.

The Gers once again failed to pick up a win in the Scottish Premiership under Russell Martin as they drew 1-1 at Ibrox on 9 August.

A late James Tavernier penalty rescued a point in Govan after Ryan Astley had put the away side up with an excellent looping header earlier in the second half.

Frustration was in the air among both sets of supporters, with Stewart being left annoyed as footage emerged of a controversial moment in G51.

Stewart fumes at Rangers vs Dundee controversy

Given how successful the Light Blues have been in their Champions League qualifiers this campaign so far, there were high hopes against Steven Pressley’s side.

Those expectations were dashed when the Welsh defender gave the away side the lead with 52 minutes on the clock.

This only got worse when Nasser Djiga was sent off for a last-man foul on Finlay Robertson just seven minutes after falling behind.

Martin’s side were able to get back on level terms from 12 yards, although controversy surrounded the way Djeidi Gassama won the penalty.

Speaking on Premier Sports (9 August), Stewart was left unimpressed by the decision, believing the Frenchman went down too easily for the Gers.

He said: “I don’t think, I’ve got to be honest, that there’s much Drey Wright’s done there. You see, Gassama throws his legs up.

“I personally don’t think that’s a penalty kick. I don’t think there’s a collision. I think Gassama gets in and throws his legs up and goes down.”

Gassama saves Rangers and Martin

Realistically, in today’s day and age, it was a foul on the Light Blues’ winger who felt a touch and went down inside the area.

It is fair to say that there was limited contact on Gassama from Wright, but at the end of the day, there was enough to earn a spot kick.

If the man from Sheffield Wednesday hadn’t gone down, Tavernier wouldn’t have had the chance to score and save a point for the Gers.

With that being said, Martin has to pat the attacker on the back and thank him for his contribution rather than listening to the outside noise.
