Nico Raskin to look for Rangers exit as contract issues mooted at Ibrox

Rangers could potentially have a problem on their hands with Nico Raskin.

Raskin could leave Rangers in the coming weeks, with several teams interested in his signature after an impressive season in G51.

In the 3-0 win against Viktoria Plzen in the UEFA Champions League at Ibrox on Tuesday (5 August), the Belgium international was dropped from the starting lineup.

The 24-year-old’s current deal expires in 2027. However, he may now be looking for a way out after recent developments.

Russell Martin and Raskin’s relation to affect Rangers contract talks

If Russell Martin has an issue with Raskin, then the Gers might find it difficult to table a new deal for the midfielder, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist believes any complications between the Scottish manager and the Belgian national could potentially affect contract talks at Ibrox.

Jackson feels that if the 24-year-old doesn’t feel wanted at the Glaswegian outfit, he may decide to leave before the end of August.

Speaking on Hotline Live (5 August), the journalist said: “If there’s a problem between Raskin and Martin, then it might be a little bit trickier than originally anticipated to stick a contract in front of him to extend, even if you’re prepared to give him a significant pay bump.

“Because if he doesn’t feel happy or wanted or trusted as part of Martin’s key group of leaders, he may well feel now might be the best time to look at something else.”

Lyall Cameron ideal replacement for Raskin

Lyall Cameron shone against Plzen in the first leg of the third qualifying round after replacing Raskin in the team.

The former Dundee midfielder was a bundle of energy for the Gers as he contributed on both ends of the pitch.

With the 22-year-old thriving in Martin’s system, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Belgium international struggle to get in the starting lineup.

Raskin has played in a rather unorthodox position for Rangers under the Scottish manager, as he’s often had to stay a bit wide on the left under the new system.

Rothwell has been favoured as the number six, leaving the 24-year-old with more freedom to play in the final third.

The Belgian midfielder has had some struggles, though, leading to his exclusion from the starting lineup at Ibrox. Therefore, while the Light Blues arguably wouldn’t want to lose Raskin, they may have his ideal successor in Cameron.
