Rangers v Viktoria Plzen postponement latest as Met Office issue weather warning

Rangers take on Viktoria Plzen in the third round of Champions League qualifying on Tuesday.

Russell Martin’s side earned the right to play this match after beating Panathinaikos in the previous round.

This should be an easier tie, although they’ll still need to be at their best to make it through to the playoff round.

Bad weather should clear up

The Met Office has issued an amber warning on Monday (4 August), due to the possibility of high winds in Glasgow.

Storm Floris has been predicted to bring winds of 80-90 miles per hour to parts of Glasgow, which could potentially cause power cuts and make it dangerous to drive.

However, this dangerous weather has been forecast to clear up by Tuesday evening, so there is no immediate danger of Rangers’ match at Ibrox being postponed.

In fact, the Met Office has forecast a perfect summer evening for the game on Tuesday. Although rain is predicted on Tuesday morning, there’s a 10 per cent chance of precipitation during the game. Temperatures will reach highs of 16°C, and westerly winds will reach speeds of 17 miles per hour.

Rangers will be urged to move the ball quickly in attack

Rangers played the first leg at Ibrox in the last round against Panathinaikos and built a 2-0 lead thanks to two well-worked goals on the counter-attack.

Martin will urge his side to attack with similar intensity in this game. The weather conditions should allow them to do this with no problem.

Djeidi Gassama’s pace and eye for goal from the substitutes’ bench made the difference in both legs against Panathinaikos. He bagged himself a goal in each leg.

The Frenchman has been tipped to start this game and he’ll hope to cause problems from the first minute.

Cyriel Dessers may also be given a chance to lead the Rangers attack in place of Danilo, who hasn’t been at his best so far this season.

The return leg of this match will take place in Plzen on 12 August.
