Russell Martin has already made his first howler as Rangers boss

Rangers had to settle for a point in their opening day fixture with Motherwell.

This summer has certainly been filled with change, with a new ownership installed, the appointment of Russell Martin and the arrival of several new players, though Rangers’ start to the season showed very little change.

The Light Blues were held to a 1-1 draw away to Motherwell at the weekend, in a game that could have easily swung the way of the hosts.

While a lot of fingers were pointed towards the mentality of Rangers, one has to be pointed at Martin for a decision he made prior to the game.

Kieran Dowell cannot be starting games for Rangers

With Mikey Moore still awaiting clearance, the 17-year-old was ineligible to feature against Motherwell, which ultimately led to Martin playing Kieran Dowell on the right flank.

To cut it short, it was nothing short of a disaster, and a howler made by Martin.

Rangers aren’t currently blessed with options in that position, but with Findlay Curtis on the bench, and not even used, it begs the question as to what his thinking was.

Oscar Cortes, another natural winger, was also available, and after such a poor display from Dowell, Martin cannot afford to make the same mistake again.

The hope will be that Moore can make his debut soon and end this incredibly poor experiment.

Rangers still need more this summer

The Light Blues lacked any real quality in the final third, and that was a huge reason why they fell short last season.

Moore will have an influence on that, but the Gers cannot hang their hopes on a 17-year-old to completely transform their attacking identity.

Attacking reinforcements are needed, and fast, if the Gers are to have a chance of competing with Celtic for domestic success this season.
