Rangers slammed by Stewart on BBC over collapsed deal, fee was in place

Michael Stewart is less than impressed with the transfer business at Rangers so far this summer.

The Light Blues were held to a 1-1 draw away to Motherwell in the first league game of the campaign, with Russell Martin forced to bemoan the mentality of his side after the game.

Of course, it was a similar story for Barry Ferguson, who had very little to work with at Ibrox after the mess left by Philippe Clement.

However, the Gers have tried to rectify that with a whole host of new arrivals this summer, though the inability to conclude one deal in particular has left Stewart bemused.

Vaclav Cerny could have been a Rangers player this summer

Despite what was a wretched campaign at large, there were positives to take last season, and most revolved around Vaclav Cerny.

The Czech winger was instrumental in everything Rangers did going forward, and they explored the possibility of bringing him back to Ibrox on a permanent deal, in what would have been a huge coup.

However, that move failed to materialise, and Stewart cannot understand how the Light Blues allowed that deal to fall through their net.

Speaking via Sportscene (2 August) after the draw to Motherwell, he said: “They had a fee and a deal in place to sign Vaclav Cerny.

“I appreciate that the management team structure wasn’t in place, but somebody in that club has got to recognise ‘this is as good a guy as we are going to get’. He was in the building

“Do the deal and sign him. Instead, you are left with Kieran Dowell playing wide right. That is just not going to work.”

Rangers have piled a lot of pressure on Mikey Moore

With the loan addition of Mikey Moore, it has the potential to be a huge signing for Rangers, but to expect him to pick up where Cerny left off will be unreasonable.

Despite his ability, he is still just 17 years old, and to expect him to thrive in such a pressured environment at that age can be dangerous.

The 49ers will be hoping their decision pays off, and after dropping two points on the opening day, it has to.
