Sutton can’t help himself with instant Rangers swipe after 1-1 draw v Motherwell

Chris Sutton could not resist a dig at Rangers after the 1-1 draw with Motherwell on Saturday.

Russell Martin’s first league game in charge of the Gers looked set for a maiden three points, but it was not to be at Fir Park (2 August).

James Tavernier opened the scoring in the 14th minute, however, Emmanuel Longelo popped up with four minutes of normal time to play.

It was a devastating setback for the former Southampton manager as he made his Scottish Premiership bow in the dugout.

Sutton fires dig at Rangers after late setback v Motherwell

Sutton always seems to take satisfaction whenever something goes wrong with Rangers, and that is no surprise given his association with Celtic.

The 52-year-old, who made 197 appearances for the Hoops, was on commentary duty for the clash on Sky Sports.

However, it was his personal X account where he took a swipe at Martin’s side after the late leveller (2 August), saying: “Good point for Rangers in the end.”

Rangers process will not be a quick one

It is clear that the process to get the Gers back to where they belong will be a long one.

The excitement was off the charts in Govan when the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh completed their takeover to become majority owners.

While they have spent money and made seven additions to the squad, it will take much longer than one summer to fix the Ibrox outfit’s problems.

They finished 17 points behind Sutton’s former side last season, their main objective should be to drastically reduce that gap this season, then be in a position to overhaul them with another solid window next summer, as well as qualifying for the Champions League.

It will not be a quick rebuild, and supporters should be patient; neither Martin nor the new owners will be able to turn things around immediately, as it is not possible to completely flip a club’s fortunes.

It will be a complete reset from top to bottom, and it may take time to see the results, but if it goes the right way, it should be worthwhile and leave Sutton crying in the dust.
