‘Max Aarons looked uncomfortable’ with what Russell Martin had him do v Panathinaikos
Rangers are through to the third round of Champions League qualifying after holding Panathinaikos to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.
The Greek side enjoyed several chances in the first half, but would be forced to wait until the second half for the game’s opening goal.
A long VAR check finally confirmed that Filip Djuricic had headed the home side in front, but it would take just six minutes for Djeidi Gassama to strike back and restore Rangers’ lead on aggregate.
Rangers will face Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League third qualifying round, after the Czech side narrowly beat Servette.

Martin questioned on Aarons deployment
Max Aarons has spent the vast majority of his career situated on the right side of the defence.
But since his arrival at Rangers, head coach Russell Martin has elected to deploy him at the left-back, likely hoping the right-footed defender can drift inside to get involved in the team’s build-up.
The former Southampton boss does have the option of Brazilian left-back Jefte but chose to leave the 21-year-old on the bench against Panathinaikos, eventually bringing him on as Rangers looked to defend deeper.
Aarons has adapted to the position well but can look shaky at times, especially when forced to use his weaker left foot.

It was the 25-year-old’s failure to be in line with his other defenders that ultimately allowed Panathinaikos’ goal to stand, after a lengthy VAR check confirmed the left-back was playing Filip Djuricic onside.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene (30 July) after the game, Andy Halliday said: “I’ve got to say, I think Max Aarons again looked a little bit uncomfortable on that left-hand side.
“But, for sure, I think Rangers have improved.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt about it.”

Teething period expected for Rangers
Rangers fans would have known to expect a teething period under Martin.
The Englishman is stubborn but ambitious with his tactics, and the Gers can expect little deviation from his brand of football throughout his time in charge.
But, all-importantly, the head coach is bringing results, even if outlying criticisms can be taken.
Should Martin continue to do exactly that, he will certainly not have to worry about any complaints from the Ibrox faithful.
