Ferguson expects Celtic worry to set in after Rangers transfer update

Rangers are enjoying a spending spree for the ages, and there’s no sign of it stopping any time soon.

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises took over the Ibrox club this summer and have backed their new manager with significant funds to spend in the transfer market.

The new owners’ goal is to overtake Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership. They’ve realised a major squad overhaul is needed to achieve that.

With the Scottish Premiership season beginning on 2 August, people are questioning whether Rangers have done enough to sustain a serious challenge for the league title this season.

However, there’s every chance of more players signing before the SPFL season kicks off. A loan deal for Mikey Moore is close to being finalised, while Crystal Palace star Jesurun Rak-Sakyi could soon follow.

Rangers close in on Mikey Moore transfer

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has previously suggested that a couple more marquee signings may be needed for Rangers to stand a chance of toppling Celtic.

However, in an exclusive interview with Ibrox News, he claims he’s noticed Celtic fans feeling nervous about the upcoming season.

He said: “I think Celtic are pretty cagey. I can tell you that Celtic fans up here in Glasgow are really frustrated.

“They’re looking across at Rangers bringing in players, and there is a worry there. But that’s good from a Rangers perspective because a lot of work was needed this summer.

It’s good to see Celtic sweating, even if there is work to do for Rangers. Anything that unnerves them is always welcome to me.”

Martin’s Rangers can turn on the style, but consistency will be key

New Rangers manager Russell Martin has built a squad that’s capable of turning on the style and overcoming top European sides. They can also dig in and grind out a result when the going gets tough.

They have shown these important attributes during the two-legged Champions League qualifying tie against Panathinaikos.

Of course, they’ll be the favourites to win most of the Scottish Premier League matches.

While the team has a high performance ceiling, it’s consistency that wins league titles. Will Martin’s squad have the mental fortitude to deliver their peak performance and break teams down week after week? That remains to be seen.

Rangers finished 17 points behind Celtic last season. That’s an enormous gap to try and make up. You’d hope that Martin and his team should at least give Celtic a run for their money this season.
