Ferguson delighted at Moore transfer news despite one obvious caveat

Tottenham gem Mikey Moore is close to joining Rangers.

The 17-year-old is highly rated at Tottenham, but will take a medical at Ibrox with a view to a season-long loan move.

This will be the latest of several new arrivals at Rangers this summer, further boosting the attacking options available to Russell Martin.

Ibrox News presents the exclusive opinion of former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson

Ferguson rates Moore transfer as a ‘strange one’

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson rates Moore, but admits that the transfer is “strange” for other reasons.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, he explained: “It’s a strange one. He’s played some games for Spurs, but I’d always like to see young Rangers boys get promoted through the ranks. But if he can come up here and settle – and that’s the key thing – there’s no doubt he’s a talented boy who’ll help Rangers.

The thing that worries me is settling in at Rangers, in a new city. Other more experienced players have failed to do that. But maybe his young age will help him as he’ll just want to be playing.

“So it’s a signing that absolutely makes me excited from what I’ve heard, especially his versatility. Any player who plays for Tottenham is clearly a talent. I’d just like to see more of our own players come through, but this signing probably tells you there’s nobody close to doing that.”

Mikey Moore loan deal should be a win-win for club and player

Every football fan loves to see ‘one of their own’ emerge from the youth academy to make an impact in the first team.

And Ferguson makes a good point. If Moore is being targeted, there’s probably not a forward in Rangers’ youth set-up who is seen as ready to make the step up.

However, the times are changing when it comes to developing youth players.

Many clubs are trying to set up transfers for players who are 16 or younger. That’s the reality for young stars these days. Even if they’re the best in their team, there’s still a risk of someone better being recruited from another club.

Ultimately, Martin has to do what’s best for Rangers. He will have told Moore and Tottenham that there’s a chance of him getting minutes at Ibrox. That should prove to be a win-win for everyone involved.
