Conor Coady reacts to Rangers scenes at Ibrox after major transfer news

Conor Coady has been extensively linked with a move to Rangers this summer.

The Gers have been weighing up a move for the defender, after initially making their interest in a potential deal known to Leicester City weeks ago.

Coady would be the seventh new signing to bolster Russell Martin’s options, with Thelo Aasgaard, Emmanuel Fernandez, Djeidi Gassama, Nasser Djiga, Max Aarons, and Joe Rothwell already arriving.

And it emerged on Thursday (24 July) that Rangers have bid for Crystal Palace talent Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, with an initial loan move plus an obligation to buy turned down.

Despite not signing yet, Coady has been keeping a close eye on Ibrox.

Coady and Cerny react to Butland post

Rangers officially kicked off their new season on Tuesday (22 July), as they beat Panathinaikos 2-0 at Ibrox to take one step into the next round of the Champions League qualifiers.

Goals from Findlay Curtis and new signing Gassama sent the Ibrox faithful into raptures and gave new head coach Martin a dream start to his reign.

But the meeting could have played out differently if not for some brilliant early saves from Jack Butland.

The Englishman faced major criticism for his form towards the end of last season, with some suggestions made that he could even leave this summer, but the 32-year-old looked back to his best on Tuesday.

It was heroics from Butland that denied Panathinaikos what looked like a certain goal in the eighth minute, diving across his line to claw out the effort before Facundo Pellistri struck the follow-up wide.

Butland took to Instagram (23 July) to share his happiness with the result, writing: “It’s good to be back home.”

Rangers-linked defender Coady liked the post, along with Vaclav Cerny, who starred last season on loan with the Gers.

Rangers should complete Coady move

Coady made 22 appearances in the Premier League last season, and the quality he would inject into the Rangers defence cannot be ignored.

And the 32-year-old would also bring massive amounts of experience to Martin’s dressing room, the defender having amassed nearly 200 Premier League appearances during his career.

Coady has also served as a captain for multiple clubs, and could be the ideal presence to guide a young defence.
