Rangers face new Jamie Vardy transfer twist – ‘Massive global name’

Rangers are embroiled in a race to sign Jamie Vardy this summer.

Vardy, 38, left Leicester City following their relegation from the Premier League last season, ending a fairytale 13-year spell with the Foxes.

His future has been a hot topic this summer, with both Premier League and Championship sides linked with a move for the former England international.

Rangers are also interested in the ex-Fleetwood striker this summer, as they prepare for their Champions League qualifying campaign.

Rangers’ global name could persuade Vardy

Playing for a big club is no secret on Vardy’s agenda as his career begins to wind down.

One club that is regularly mentioned as a potential destination for the striker is Wrexham.

The Welsh side have made a rapid rise through the English pyramid, and their Hollywood ownership could attract another big name.

However, Dan King backs Rangers to win out in a transfer battle over Wrexham.

In the Sun on Sunday’s print edition (page 55, 20 July), King said: “But the Premier League legend [Vardy] is being uncharacteristically slow to make his next move.

“Which raises the intriguing possibility that Vardy could yet fill one of the few holes on his CV – playing for a ‘big’ club.

“With all due respect to Wrexham, that’s not them, despite their Hollywood connections and Netflix-able rise through the divisions.

“You could argue that Rangers remain a massive global name, thanks to their rich history and the millions of ex-pat Scots around the world.”

King reported, however, that the links between Vardy and the Gers have cooled for the moment.

He said: “But the links between Vardy and Rangers, like the rumours about him and Wrexham, have gone cold for now.”

Vardy would excel in Scotland

The Englishman has understandably slowed down his goalscoring as his age begins to catch up with him.

However, Vardy managed to register nine goals in the Premier League last season, accounting for over a quarter of Leicester’s total tally.

Vardy leaves Leicester as a Premier League legend

Given that there is a noticeable drop-off between the English top flight and the SPFL, the Englishman can grind out a couple more years in Scotland, while also battling for trophies.

The Gers would need to convince Vardy to turn down any prospects of staying in England, but his signing could help close the gap to Celtic.
