Rangers ‘to seal Josh Windass return’ after Sheffield Wednesday announcement

Josh Windass could be set to return to Rangers.

The 31-year-old played for the Gers between 2016 and 2018, notching 19 goals and 13 assists in 73 matches for the Ibrox outfit.

Russell Martin is looking for attacking reinforcements to bolster his squad, and Windass fits the bill, having scored 13 goals and bagged six assists for Sheffield Wednesday last season.

Now, the Light Blues could be set to take advantage of the Championship side’s financial issues after already signing Djeidi Gassama from them.

Rangers to snap up Windass after Sheffield Wednesday announcement

Rangers were reportedly interested in a reunion with Windass, and it could be a realistic possibility after a new announcement was made.

A statement released by the Hillsborough club on their X account (17 July) stated that Windass’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent.

That could open up the door for a free transfer to the Govan outfit and a second stint with the Auchenhowie club.

Windass would be a solid addition for Rangers

The Gers could be set to lose Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers, with European clubs sniffing around for their services.

Vaclav Cerny has not returned after his impressive loan move last season, and Oscar Cortes and Rabbi Matondo are genuine options for the attack at the moment, which is a frightening prospect for supporters.

The 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh, the new majority owners of the Bears, may decide to pounce after the announcement that the veteran will be a free agent.

He can play across the forward line and in midfield and could be a valuable addition for Martin, especially if there is no fee attached.

It is the exact type of ruthless business that the Gers need to do this summer, if they are to have any chance of catching Celtic, who finished 17 points ahead of them in the Scottish Premiership last season.

Martin needs more attackers, and he already knows the club, so he would be comfortable immediately and not have to adapt to Scottish football.

It is a no-brainer for the Glasgow giants to snap up Windass.
