Aasgaard injured in Rangers pre-season blow, he faces scans as Ibrox chiefs react

Thelo Aasgaard is one of many exciting new signings at Rangers this summer.

The midfielder joined Ibrox from Luton Town after failing to keep the Hatters in the Championship.

However, there are big expectations, with the 23-year-old having an excellent career at Wigan Athletic for many years.

With the Champions League qualifiers around the corner, many of the Ibrox faithful were expecting to see him play a part.

Yet, recent developments may have now ruined Russell Martin’s plans.

Aasgaard a doubt for Rangers vs Panathinaikos

While Rangers’ pre-season may be short, the Glaswegians have still had to endure injuries before the new campaign.

According to The Scottish Sun (16 July), Aasgaard is now a major doubt for the Champions League tie against Panathinaikos.

The midfielder was hurt in a midweek bounce game against Dunfermline and is now facing scans.

Now, after the setback, the 23-year-old is in a race to be fit for the first-leg match against the Greek giants.

However, the report goes on to say the Rangers chiefs are relieved that Aasgaard is not facing a longer absence after the injury blow.

Rangers should have enough to overcome Panathinaikos

Even without Aasgaard, Rangers should have enough to progress in the Champions League second round qualifiers.

The Gers faced far tougher tests in the Europa League last season, and it took until Athletic Bilbao for the Glaswegians to be knocked out.

While Panathinaikos will provide a stern test, especially with it being Martin’s first competitive tie in charge of Rangers, there is easily enough quality to overcome this challenge.

Now, the task for the Gers is to prevent any kind of upset from occurring. Victory in this round of the qualifiers is vital.

Therefore, it would be an early concern if Martin fails to progress into the next round, even without Aasgaard, given the ability that the squad had before the eight new additions.
