Rangers lose ‘best talent in Scotland’ after new Liverpool transfer announcement

Rangers are set for a pivotal summer, for both their men’s and women’s teams.

As Russell Martin prepares to try and bridge the gap to Celtic and qualify for the Champions League, the women’s team is without a manager.

The men have made significant additions with the likes of Max Aarons, Thelo Aasgard and Nasser Djiga walking through the doors at Auchenhowie.

However, the women’s team have only just completed their first transfer of the summer, with Fallon Connolly-Jackson joining from Sheffield United.

Maclean seals Liverpool transfer to end Rangers stay

Rangers Women have had to deal with the loss of manager Jo Potter, who has joined Crystal Palace, and they have now also lost one of their best players.

Liverpool announced the signing of Kirsty Maclean on July 14, bringing an end to her 11-year association with the Light Blues.

The Scotsman journalist Graham Falk, who broke the news of a potential deal, believes that the swoop is a real coup for the Reds, saying: “Kirsty Maclean has completed her move to Liverpool from Rangers.

“Excellent signing. The best young talent in Scotland.”

Rangers need to replace Maclean

Losing an academy graduate is never a good thing, but, understandably, Maclean fancies playing in the Women’s Super League in England.

However, it is a problem for the Gers as she had forged a huge role in Potter’s side, making over 100 appearances since her debut as a 16-year-old.

The 20-year-old will be sorely missed in Govan, and the new majority owners, the 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh, must ensure that she is replaced properly within the squad.

Maclean made 21 appearances for the Ibrox outfit last season, notching two goals and four assists, and has been capped 10 times for Scotland, so her influence will be tough to replace, but it has to be done.

She was named Rangers Women’s Players’ Player of the Year in 2024 and was nominated for PFA Scotland Women’s Young Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024, but did not win the award on either occasion.

The Gers need to bounce back from the final day heartache after narrowly missing out on the title against Hibernian, and that will be harder without their homegrown star.
