‘Chansiri relies on Rangers’ in Sheffield Wednesday takeover as debts laid bare

Rangers look set to sign Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama imminently.

The transfer has been delayed due to issues surrounding Sheffield Wednesday’s ownership, but should be signed off in the coming days.

Gers will be able to land Gassama for a bargain fee of around £2.5million as Wednesday are in dire need of financial stimulus.

Indeed, the finer details of the Owls’ debt problems have recently emerged.

Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri owes more than £4m in football debts

The Sun on Sunday (13 July, page 58) reports that Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri owes more than £4million in football debts.

This includes funds owed to existing players and staff, as well as a £2.2m tax bill for June and July.

Chansiri is actively looking to sell the club, and these debts will have to be paid by whoever buys it from him.

The £2.5m transfer of Gassama will go a long way to helping out Sheffield Wednesday, as there will be serious consequences if these bills remain unpaid.

Sheffield Wednesday are also looking to offload forward Anthony Musaba.

Rangers got a fantastic deal on Gassama

The imminent signing of Gassama has been described as “a real steal”. The 21-year-old winger terrorised defences in the Championship last season and has the potential to become one of the top players in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers have taken advantage of Wednesday being in such a dire financial situation.

Supporters may have empathy with the Owls, considering Rangers experienced similar woes in the past. At the same time, they should celebrate landing such a talented player for such a low fee.

Gassama has pace to burn and isn’t afraid to run at defences. He scored eight goals for Wednesday and is capable of hitting screamers from outside the box. It’s an exciting signing that offers something different to Rangers’ existing signings.

Russell Martin has said that the deal is “as good as done” at Rangers’ end, and the player has agreed personal terms.

It will now be hoped that the issues at Wednesday’s end can be resolved so that Gassama can be confirmed as Rangers’ newest signing as soon as possible.
