Rangers at centre of ‘unbelievable’ claim after mega Tottenham deal goes through
Rangers have been enjoying a busy transfer window following the takeover by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.
The new owners have promised manager Russell Martin plenty of funds to spend in the transfer window, and a handful of new players have already been recruited.
The Light Blues will be hoping to compete in the Champions League this season, although they’ll need to navigate three qualifying rounds to get to the group stage. Still, Rangers have high ambitions and that will be the early goal for Martin, his squad and the owners.
However, it’s not easy to attract Champions League quality players to Scotland, and the reason why has been laid bare for all to see this week.

Alan Brazil laments ‘unbelievable’ amounts of money being spent in transfer market
Rangers often find themselves competing with English clubs for the signatures of their transfer targets, but it can be impossible for them to offer these players the wages they could earn at a Premier League club.
Scottish clubs can’t afford the astronomical transfer fees that Premier League teams are spending on new players either.
This is the point that Alan Brazil was arguing on his talkSPORT Breakfast show on Friday (11 July).
In a conversation with co-host Ray Parlour, he suggested it was impossible for even Rangers and Celtic to compete with Premier League clubs.
Using Tottenham’s capture of Mohammed Kudus for £55million as an example, he said: “I was thinking while lying in bed last night about different moves and money.
“You have Celtic and Rangers, two giant clubs, and you look at the money… It’s just ridiculous. It’s black and white, really – unbelievable.”
Rangers have started well in the transfer market
They say “comparison is the thief of joy” – a lesson Brazil might want to keep in mind, considering Rangers’ financial muscle dominates that of every Scottish club except one.
What would the likes of Aberdeen, Hibernian or Dundee give to have the spending power of the Old Firm clubs?
Despite their financial limits, Rangers have enjoyed a solid start to the transfer market. They are slowly building a squad that should be capable of competing with Celtic far better than last year.

Martin may also be quietly confident of getting past Panathinaikos in their first Champions League qualifying tie later in August.
He’ll need to ensure his new signings gel quickly into the team, and there’s still work to do on that front. Rangers played their first pre-season friendly against Club Brugge last Sunday (6 June) and looked sloppy at times.
