‘Kevin Thelwell ruthless’ with Jose Cifuentes contract talks at Rangers

Jose Cifuentes could potentially be affected as Rangers hold talks over his contract at Ibrox this transfer window.

The 26-year-old signed for the Gers in the summer of 2023 but was sent out on loan a few months later to Cruzeiro.

Cifuentes joined Aris for the 2024/25 campaign, and the Greek outfit had a £4million option to buy him, but didn’t opt to trigger it.

Olympiacos have now held talks with the Ecuador midfielder, and Kevin Thelwell may be willing to take a ruthless step to ensure his exit.

Rangers to terminate Cifuentes contract for transfer negotiations

Cifuentes is expected to leave the Gers in the ongoing transfer window, according to Diario Expreso.

The news outlet reports in its print edition (10 July, page 13) that the Light Blues are willing to terminate the 26-year-old’s contract at Ibrox so he can negotiate with other teams.

It’s been claimed that the Ecuador international’s links with Los Angeles FC could open doors for a return to the MLS, but his stay in Europe hasn’t been ruled out.

The Glaswegian outfit have made some astute additions to their engine room, and Cifuentes’ exit feels like the best option for both parties.

Russell Martin has Joe Rothwell and Thelo Aasgaard at Ibrox

Former Leeds United loanee Joe Rothwell has signed for the Gers after an impressive season at Elland Road, winning the Championship title.

Thelo Aasgaard has also completed his switch from Luton Town to the Light Blues, giving Russell Martin plenty of options in the middle of the park.

Cifuentes has failed to fulfil his potential at Ibrox, and it makes sense for the Gers to learn from their mistakes and terminate his contract.

Rangers could lose Nico Raskin to Wolves this summer, but they have so far fended off interest from down south in the Belgian star.

Mohamed Diomande is also attracting interest around Europe after catching the attention of many with his performances in the previous campaign.

Martin will undoubtedly be delighted with the signings so far, but wouldn’t want to lose key players before the end of August.

As for Cifuentes, he seems to have no future at Ibrox.
