Gassama at Rangers training camp already as fee agreed for first Chansiri exit

Rangers look set to take advantage of Sheffield Wednesday’s financial woes with a deal for Djeidi Gassama moving ever closer.

Russell Martin is preparing his squad for their upcoming Champions League qualifiers later this month, and will need all the help he can get in the transfer market.

Rangers kicked off their pre-season with a 2-2 draw with Club Brugge at Ibrox on Sunday, and have now headed down south for a training camp.

They have been joined at St George’s Park by Gassama, who is now about to finalise his move to the Light Blues.

Rangers close in on Gassama

Rangers are now taking advantage of the troubles at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, who were recently handed a transfer embargo for the upcoming three windows.

Owner Dejphron Chansiri is planning a fire sale of their best talents to raise funds, with some players going unpaid, and this will see Gassama exit and join Rangers.

Joe Crann has now reported that Rangers have agreed a four-year contract with Gassama, with the final fee, set to be undisclosed, also now sorted.

The 21-year-old could be an excellent pickup for Rangers, having impressed at Sheffield Wednesday, and would arrive with plenty of potential and resale value.

With the Yorkshire side at the same training base, it is said there isn’t far to go.

Rangers need more attacking signings

While Rangers have reinforced their defensive and midfield options, they are currently light in the final third, and this needs to be addressed urgently.

The Club Brugge draw saw Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane sidelined, and Danilo was far from convincing as a lone striker.

Gassama is a good start in terms of addressing options out wide, but another signing in the area is necessary before the Champions League fixtures begin.

There has been more movement in recent days as Thelo Aasgaard completed a move from Luton, and Rangers will now hope to tie up the Gassama deal quickly so they can focus on other targets.

Martin’s side will take part in some behind-closed-doors friendlies at St George’s Park, and he will hope for more injured players to return after being left with a threadbare squad against Club Brugge.
