De Jong transfer update emerges as sources speak out on Rangers deal

Rangers may be affected in their search for a new number nine this transfer window amid links to PSV Eindhoven striker Luuk de Jong.

The Gers could potentially lose both Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers in the coming weeks, with LOSC Lille and AEK Athens interested in the two centre-forwards, respectively.

De Jong’s name has been associated with Ibrox recently, but it remains to be seen what the future holds for the 34-year-old whose contract at the Eredivisie outfit expired at the end of June.

Russell Martin undoubtedly needs attacking reinforcements at the Glaswegian outfit soon, but the Dutch forward may not be an option.

Rangers transfer not on table for De Jong

De Jong isn’t of interest to the Gers after his contract expired at PSV, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist revealed that, according to his intelligence, the 34-year-old is not being considered as an option at Ibrox.

Jackson disclosed that the striker’s entourage and trusted sources in the Netherlands have admitted that the Light Blues aren’t at the table for him.

Speaking on Hotline Live (8 July), the journalist said: “All of the intelligence I’m getting from Holland, from the players’ camp and from trusted sources over there is that Rangers aren’t at the table.”

Martin should push for De Jong transfer at Ibrox

De Jong’s transfer to Ibrox could potentially provide Martin with a reliable goalscorer as the Gers look to compete with Celtic next season.

Dessers was the Light Blues’ leading goalscorer in the previous campaign, and the Nigeria international’s contributions will need to be replaced if he leaves.

Igamane’s move to Lille also looks likely as he’s agreed personal terms with the Ligue 1 outfit, possibly leaving the Scottish manager with Danilo as his lone option up front.

While De Jong’s age may be a point of contention to some fans, he has consistently found the back of the net in recent seasons at PSV.

The Dutchman would surely be a quality short-term addition to the Gers’ ranks, and his arrival on a free transfer seems like a no-brainer.

Martin should push Kevin Thelwell and the recruitment department to consider making an approach for the 34-year-old centre-forward, but how his situation unfolds remains to be seen.
