Propper exit imminent at Rangers as club chief makes £7m transfer admission

Rangers star Robin Propper looks destined to leave Ibrox soon.

A European club has spoken of their desire to sign him, although there is a hurdle preventing the deal from being signed off.

Still, it’s expected he will leave Rangers in the next few days.

FC Twente keen to seal Propper transfer soon

Propper started at centre-half in a friendly against Club Brugge on Sunday (6 July).

However, his old club FC Twente have expressed their desire to bring him back to the Netherlands as soon as possible.

FC Twente sports director Jan Streuer has confirmed that the Dutch defender is one of the key targets for the summer.

However he has also admitted he will need to negotiate the price tag as Twente are not a club that can splash out large sums of money.

He said: “There is no clarity yet with Robin, but we hope to get it very soon.

“We have money to buy players. Is that a lot of money? Twente is not a club that is going to pay five, six or seven million for a player. We are not there yet. But we can do something.”

Propper didn’t look like a player that could attract a multi-million fee in the friendly against Club Brugge, where Russell Martin’s side were a mess defensively at times.

Although players shouldn’t be judged solely on their first performance of pre-season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave Ibrox for a smaller fee.

Propper made 43 appearances for the Light Blues last season but is regarded as a weak link among some supporters.

Rangers have two weeks to get squad in shape for Panathinaikos tie

It’s hardly surprising that Rangers looked a little shaky defensively in their first pre-season game.

That’s just the way it goes at this stage of the season, especially with a new manager taking charge for the first time.

It’s all about shaking off the cobwebs before the first competitive game of the season.

However, Martin has less time than he’s used to get his side running at 100 per cent efficiency. Rangers take on Panathinaikos on 22 July in a crucial Champions League qualifying game.

The two-legged tie will have a huge impact on Rangers’ finances and their prospects for the coming season. This game will have been a huge motivator behind their speedy and decisive action in the transfer market.

Martin’s side will be expected to thrive domestically and in Europe this season. He may have to sell players to raise enough money to build a squad capable of that. So, Propper may well find himself back at his old club before this fixture comes around.

Conor Coady has been tipped to replace him at centre-back, if Rangers can complete his transfer from Leicester City.
