James Tavernier reacts as Rangers make transfer announcement
James Tavernier has watched Russell Martin get to work with several new transfers in recent weeks following his appointment at Rangers.
Tavernier has become a legend at Ibrox, playing more than 500 games and winning multiple trophies during his ten years in Govan, most as captain.
The 33-year-old has been a regular at right-back throughout his spell at Ibrox, but his influence has decreased in recent seasons.
Tavernier has been key to Rangers’ attacking output, but his future in Glasgow remains uncertain.

Rangers announce Thelo Aasgaard from Luton
Aasgaard has become Rangers’ fourth signing since Martin took over, as the former Southampton boss continues to put his blueprint on the side.
Incomings at Ibrox don’t seem to be slowing down either, with Rangers closing in on Wolves defender Nasser Djiga.
Rangers announced the signing of Aasgaard on Instagram, with Tavernier instantly reacting with a like.
Luton only signed Aasgaard in January, with the midfielder expected to help the former Premier League club avoid the drop to League One.
Matt Bloomfield’s side were ultimately relegated on the final day of the season, with many of their players now being sold for cut prices.
Aasgaard, 23, will add attacking output to Rangers and could cost up to £4million.
Tavernier to lose his place at right-back under Martin
Tavernier’s impact at Rangers can’t be understated, but his inconsistent dips in form and his age don’t make him an attractive prospect to new boss Martin.
Season | Appearances | Goals |
2024/25 | 33 | 4 |
2023/24 | 38 | 17 |
2022/23 | 38 | 16 |
2021/22 | 35 | 9 |
2020/21 | 33 | 12 |
With the arrival of Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth, if Tavernier were to become a back-up option next season, it’s not really an unfair move.
Martin did bench the Englishman against Club Brugge in his first match in charge on Sunday, but not much can be read into that, given it’s the first friendly of the season.
However, Tavernier’s impact will still be felt whether that’s on the pitch, coming on as a substitute, or from the sidelines helping Martin in whichever way he can.
