Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell possibility to ‘amaze’ after Rangers transfer claim
Russell Martin has had Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell at Rangers for the start of pre-season at Auchenhowie.
The former Liverpool centre-back joined Birmingham City on loan last summer, and the 27-year-old playmaker followed him in the winter transfer window.
The League One champions hope to sign Davies and Dowell permanently, but it remains to be seen whether the Gers will let them go.
Martin has a tough test against Panathinaikos coming up, and it isn’t surprising to see the former Southampton boss keeping the duo in Glasgow for the time being.

Kris Boyd would be amazed to see Davies and Dowell stay at Rangers
Kris Boyd would be amazed if Davies and Dowell stayed at the Gers this summer.
The ex-forward would be baffled if the two Englishmen were shown the door at Ibrox after their loan spells at Birmingham last season.
Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Dowell | 23 | 5 | 5 |
Davies | 44 | 1 | 1 |
In the previous campaign, the 29-year-old defender was a regular in the Blues’ starting lineup, with Dowell also making a significant contribution as they won promotion to the Championship.
Boyd wrote in The Scottish Sun (4 July): “Davies and Dowell spent last season on loan at Birmingham City, and I’d be amazed if they weren’t shown the door now.”

Martin can sanction Davies transfer after defensive reinforcements at Ibrox
Former Peterborough United defender Emmanuel Fernandez signed for the Gers recently as they look to bolster their defence.
With Leon Balogun’s exit and Robin Propper possibly returning to FC Twente this summer, multiple additions are arguably needed in the Light Blues’ backline.
Kevin Thelwell is working hard to bolster the squad, with Leicester City star Conor Coady and Wolves centre-back Nasser Djiga concrete options for the Glaswegian outfit.
Once Rangers complete the deals for the two defenders playing down south, it would make sense to cash in on Davies.
The Englishman’s current contract at the Gers expires in 2026, and this feels like the right time to cash in on him as Birmingham are showing interest.
Dowell may remain a part of Martin’s plans for a few more weeks unless the Light Blues reinforce their attack, and his situation is one to keep an eye on.
