Clement ‘to ask questions’ as Rangers on brink of Coady capture in double deal

Leicester City centre-back Conor Coady could be a new Rangers player within hours of the ongoing transfer window.

The Gers lost Leon Balogun after his contract expired, and it isn’t surprising to see them focusing on reinforcing their defence.

Russell Martin arguably needs new defenders at Ibrox ahead of facing Panathinaikos in the first leg of the Champions League qualifier at home on 22 July.

Coady could move to the Scottish Premiership soon, and it feels like a matter of time before the Light Blues strike an agreement.

Leicester to approve Coady transfer to Rangers in 24 to 48 hours

Leicester are expected to give the Gers the green light to sign Coady in the next 24 to 48 hours, according to Record Sport.

The news outlet reports (1 July) that the Light Blues are closing in on the English defender’s signing at Ibrox, with former Everton sporting director Kevin Thelwell proving to be a catalyst in the prospective deal.

It’s been claimed that the 32-year-old has been on the Bears’ radar for more than a year, and Philippe Clement wanted him on loan last summer before Steve Cooper decided to keep the centre-back after replacing Enzo Maresca as the Foxes’ head coach.

The Belgian manager ended up having Robin Propper in his ranks, and he will be asking questions as the Glaswegian outfit are set to pull off a double deal, with Joe Rothwell also likely on his way from Bournemouth.

Thelwell building special team for Martin at Ibrox

Max Aarons has moved to Ibrox on loan this summer, becoming the US consortium’s first signing since taking over at the Gers.

Lyall Cameron had agreed a pre-contract offer from the Light Blues in the winter transfer window before his signing was officially announced in June.

With Martin set to have Rothwell at his disposal, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are showing significant ambition at the Glaswegian outfit.

While some might be unhappy with Rangers getting slightly older players from down south, their quality and experience will undoubtedly help the former Southampton boss compete with Celtic.

The former Leeds United loanee was one of the best players in the English Championship last season, helping the West Yorkshire outfit win the league title.

Coady might not be in his prime, but the England international has shown enough quality over the years to help the Gers get back to the top.

Thelwell appears to be assembling a special team for the Bears, and barring any significant departures, apart from Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers, Martin should be confident about winning silverware in the coming months.
