Rangers ‘surprise’ emerges after Josh Mulligan transfer agreement

Kevin Thelwell has already gotten to work at Ibrox as Rangers look to back Russell Martin this transfer window.

Lyall Cameron’s switch from Dundee to the Glaswegian outfit was confirmed recently after a pre-contract agreement with the midfielder

Bournemouth defender Max Aarons has joined the Gers on loan for the upcoming campaign as Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises look to build a competitive squad.

Josh Mulligan was also being linked with a move to Ibrox, but Hibernian have confirmed his signing, which has come as a bit of a shock.

Mulligan transfer not being considered by Rangers a surprise

Scott McDermott is surprised to see the Gers didn’t consider reuniting Mulligan with Cameron this summer.

The Daily Record journalist believes Martin needs someone like the 22-year-old midfielder at Ibrox due to his physicality.

McDermott has praised Hibernian for pulling off a deal for the Scottish star and expects him to be a great signing for David Gray’s team.

The journalist wrote in the Record (28 June): “I’m surprised Rangers didn’t consider bringing Mulligan in alongside his ex-Dundee team-mate Cameron. He offers physicality and running power, something Rangers need in midfield. But fair play to Hibs, he should be a terrific signing for Gray.”

Martin will hope for more transfers at Ibrox this summer

Max Aarons will provide competition to James Tavernier next season, and it makes sense for the Gers to snub Mulligan’s transfer.

The former Dundee star is a versatile player capable of playing on the right-hand side of the defence and in the middle of the park.

Martin already has the likes of Nico Raskin, Mohamed Diomande and Connor Barron in the engine room, and the 22-year-old would have arguably found regular game time hard to come by in G51.

Rangers could sign the likes of Conor Coady next, with the Scottish manager undoubtedly desperate for defensive reinforcements at Ibrox.

The Light Blues have lost Leon Balogun ahead of the upcoming campaign, and Robin Propper could also return to FC Twente soon.

Dujon Sterling and Ridvan Yilmaz’s consistent fitness issues make them unreliable, while it remains to be seen how Clinton Nsiala fares under new management.

There are also question marks around Jack Butland, and his situation in G51 is one to watch closely.
