Rangers Exclusive: Why Kwame Poku really rejected Ibrox for QPR

Rangers will have been disappointed to learn that Kwame Poku decided to sign for QPR.

The 23-year-old was available on a free transfer this summer after opting to leave Peterborough United at the end of his contract.

This piqued the interest of a number of sides, with the Ibrox club facing initial competition from Birmingham City at the early stages of the window.

Neither side landed the Ghanaian in the end, as Ibrox News learns why Poku opted to move to Queens Park Rangers instead of Govan.

Rangers learn reason behind Poku to QPR decision

It will have come as a blow to Russell Martin and Co. to have missed out on a deal which looked destined to be a proper bargain in G51.

That has been made somewhat worse by the forward joining QPR, who have since taken aim at the Gers in a bizarre social media jibe.

This has left many supporters in Govan questioning why the ex-Colchester United man opted against a potential Scottish Premiership title race and European football.

It has now been revealed to Ibrox News by Ghanaian journalist Owuraku Ampofo that a move to Loftus Road better lends itself to Poku’s aim to play in the Premier League.

He said: “From people close to the player’s circle, the aim has always been to reach the Premier League. Queens Park Rangers presented an ambitious project and a decent financial package

Leaving England was an option, but the deal on the table was good.

This points towards a preference for English football, something which may be seen as a kick in the teeth to those associated with the Light Blues.

Poku opted against Rangers move to better career

With the winger fixated on the Premier League, it does feel slightly bizarre to join a side who finished 15th in the Championship last season.

This is especially the case after Poku played a key role in 22 goals across his 31 outings last campaign for a largely struggling Peterborough side.

Whatever happens now, the left-footer has made his decision, and now the Light Blues have to look into other targets with Kevin Thelwell at the helm.

This has already seen Dor Turgeman linked to Ibrox as the new head coach looks to bolster his forward options before the season begins.
