John Souttar ‘to start for Rangers v Panathinaikos’ after social media reveal

Russell Martin will hope to count on John Souttar as Rangers face Panathinaikos in the Champions League qualifier.

Doubts were raised around the Scotland international’s availability at Ibrox for the first leg against the Greek outfit on 22 July after he underwent surgery for a hernia issue.

The Gers seem desperate for a new centre-back ahead of the ex-Southampton boss’ first competitive game in charge this season, and Leicester City defender Conor Coady is attracting interest in G51.

With the evident lack of depth in the Glaswegian outfit’s backline, they may have been handed a big boost regarding Souttar.

Rangers hope emerges as Souttar trains with Tom Lawrence and John Lundstram

Souttar has been spotted training with former teammates Tom Lawrence and John Lundstram.

The Trabzonspor midfielder who spent three years at Ibrox shared a picture with the Wales international and Scotsman on his Instagram story.

Martin will undoubtedly be delighted to know that the 28-year-old is seemingly doing work off the pitch to return to action sooner rather than later.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the defender start for the Light Blues against Panathinaikos over the two legs in July, but it remains to be seen how his recovery progresses.

Martin needs Souttar for Champions League success at Ibrox

Leon Balogun’s departure from Ibrox has left Martin with fewer defensive options to rely on ahead of next season.

While Robin Propper returned to Auchenhowie for pre-season training, FC Twente are keen on his return this transfer window.

The Gers undoubtedly need to bolster their backline in the coming weeks, and Max Aarons’ signing is only the first step towards building a competitive team.

Rangers have Clinton Nsiala at their disposal, but Barry Ferguson didn’t seem to trust the youngster, and Martin could potentially go down a similar route.

Dujon Sterling impressed many playing as a right-back and central defender in the previous campaign, but his consistent fitness issues make him unreliable.

Kevin Thelwell should prioritise defensive reinforcements even if Souttar is fully fit to face Panathinaikos.

The Greek outfit are seen as favourites for the tie, but the Scottish defender’s availability will arguably give the Light Blues a boost in their hopes of progressing further in the Champions League.
