Dessers terms agreed for Rangers exit in ‘significant’ transfer fee twist

Cyriel Dessers has seemingly just taken a major step towards his Rangers departure.

The Nigerian frontman ended last season as the Premiership’s top scorer, but he still faced criticism from Bears supporters for his wastefulness at times.

That has prompted suggestions that Dessers could be in line to exit Ibrox ahead of the new campaign, with AEK Athens currently pushing hard to sign the 30-year-old.

Greek giants AEK have already seen one bid rejected for Dessers, but that doesn’t appear to have deterred them in their pursuit to secure his signature.

AEK agree personal terms with Dessers but are still yet to agree a fee

There promises to be plenty of changes at Ibrox next season as Russell Martin takes the reins, and it seems as though the new boss will need to place greater priority on the need to sign a striker after Dessers’ future has taken another twist.

The former Genk and Feyenoord man is now understood to have agreed on personal terms with AEK, according to the Greek outlet Sportime (26 June).

The capital club are still facing a disagreement over a potential transfer fee with the Bears, but they have everything outlined with Dessers himself.

The frontman is set to receive around £1.5million per year in wages – which means a weekly wage of just shy of £30,000 – if he completes the switch.

That has been reported to be a substantial increase to the money he is currently receiving at Rangers.

As far as the transfer fee goes, the difference between AEK’s most recent offer and Rangers’ demands is described as “significant”.

The Greeks’ current offer is valued at around £3.8m, while Kevin Thelwell and Co. are thought to be holding out for around £1m more.

Dessers’ exit now seems inevitable

With personal terms already agreed, Dessers’ exit from Ibrox now seems inevitable.

As suggested by the reports, it feels highly unlikely that AEK won’t up their offer to meet Rangers’ demands, such is their desire to sign the striker.

The two clubs are not at all far apart in their respective valuations, and as soon as a deal can be reached on that front, the transfer will surely go through quickly and easily.

Despite Dessers’ flaws, Martin will lose a proven goalscorer from within his ranks before his Gers tenure has even properly begun.

His ability to replace the outgoing star could define his first season in charge of the Govan outfit.
