Rangers star James Tavernier reacts as new appointment made

James Tavernier’s future at Rangers is in doubt this summer.

The Rangers captain came under a fair amount of criticism last season as the Gers endured a hugely underwhelming campaign campaign.

Now, with Russell Martin at the helm, there are plenty of decisions to be made over how Rangers’ squad will be shaped this close season and whether Tavernier has a place at Ibrox moving forward.

Tavernier reacts to Harry Watling appointment

It’s a summer of change at Ibrox, after the takeover of the club has been completed by Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers.

New manager Martin started pre-season training with his new squad this week and he will be hoping to get a clearer picture of the additions he needs in his squad.

It has been reported that Max Aarons is closing in on a move to Glasgow this summer, though, and that could well mean that Tavernier’s run as first-choice right-back could be coming to an end.

It’s not just at Ibrox that things are changing, though, with former Rangers man Harry Watling also on the move this summer.

After leaving the Gers in 2023, Watling has since managed at National League side Ebbsfleet, leaving there at the end of 2024.

Now, the former coach has made the move to Middlesbrough, where he forms part of Rob Edwards’ coaching staff at The Riverside Stadium.

After posting about his delight at his new role on Instagram, Tavernier showed his support for the former coach as he liked the post.

Tavernier to have one more season at Rangers

At 33-years-old and going into the final season of his contract at Rangers, if Tavernier were to become a back-up option next season, it’s not really an unfair move.

The defender has plenty of experience both on and off the pitch, which could well be useful for Martin to have in his side still going forward.

Tavernier has been a regular at Rangers for some time now.

The campaign could well prove to be Tavernier’s last in Light Blue, but he will surely be keen to redeem himself from recent disappointment and make supporters proud one last time.

There’s a big season ahead for the Bears and as much as Rangers need upgrades in their squad, Martin cannot afford to completely overhaul the side either.
