Robin Propper ‘transfer interest confirmed’ amid new Rangers twist

Robin Propper has been linked with a Rangers exit after an underwhelming first season at Ibrox.

The 31-year-old, despite his inconsistent form, ended up making 43 appearances in all competitions for the first team.

John Souttar and Leon Balogun were the preferred options, but they faced fitness issues, paving the way for Propper to get more minutes.

FC Twente confirm interest in Robin Propper

FC Twente are open to paying Rangers around £1million to reunite with the centre-back this summer.

They sold him for a little more than twice that amount last summer, but watching him struggle at Gers has given them the chance of getting him back.

This interest has now been confirmed by the Dutch club’s technical director Jan Streuer, who, in no uncertain terms, has admitted that the 31-year-old is welcome to return.

He said: “We were interested in Propper and he is very welcome. He was also very welcome at the Rangers training today.

“Of course, he still has a contract there. We’ll wait and see.

“There was a lot of pressure on him to come back. He has to be one hundred per cent behind it himself.”

Martin appears to be giving Propper a chance to fight for his future at Rangers

The delay in resolving Propper’s future at Rangers could indicate that Russell Martin is considering giving the Dutch defender a fresh opportunity to prove himself.

His first season at Ibrox, following his £2.5million move from FC Twente in 2024, with his struggles to adapt to the Scottish Premiership’s intensity.

His performances drew criticism, and interest from FC Twente for a potential return has surfaced, with the Eredivisie side keen to re-sign the 30-year-old.

However, Martin’s hesitation to finalise the 31-year-old’s departure suggests he may see potential for improvement, possibly during pre-season, to assess if he can align with his tactical demands, emphasising ball-playing defenders.

If the former Southampton boss concludes Propper lacks the technical or physical attributes for his system, this evaluation period could accelerate a transfer back to FC Twente, where he previously excelled, making 104 appearances.

A swift decision would benefit all parties, allowing Rangers to reinvest any transfer fee and the Dutchman to secure regular playing time.

Martin’s methodical approach underscores his intent to build a cohesive squad, but clarity on the defender’s role is crucial to avoid disrupting Rangers’ preparations for the upcoming season.
