Rangers to bank new compensation after manager exit at Ibrox

Jo Potter has got a new role after leaving Rangers earlier this week.

The former England midfielder took the role with the Ibrox club, which was her first in management, in 2023.

The 40-year-old missed out on the Scottish Women’s Premier League on the final day in both seasons that she managed Rangers Women.

However, she did manage to win a domestic cup double in both campaigns, despite disappointment in the league.

Potter set for Crystal Palace after Rangers exit

Rangers Men’s and Women’s teams will both have new managers at the helm for the new season, after Russell Martin was named in charge on 5 June.

BBC Sport journalist Emma Sanders reported (24 June) that Potter was set to be named as the Crystal Palace boss.

She states that the Gers will receive compensation as a result of the appointment from the former Women’s Super League club, who were relegated last season.

Rangers exit is a shame for Potter

Potter’s first foray into management was a successful one as she won five trophies with the Light Blues.

She won two Scottish Women’s Cups, two Scottish Women’s Premier League Cups and the City of Glasgow Women’s Cup in her tenure.

However, the title ultimately eluded her, and that is perceived to be the reason for her exit, given the significant advantage that the Govan side has in terms of facilities and investment.

The title was in the Gers’ hands as they would have won it had they beaten Hibernian on the final day of the campaign, but they fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Potter was contracted with the Gers until 2026, and it is understood that the Auchenhowie club were reluctant to lose her.

However, the chance for a new opportunity has proven to be too tempting, and the new majority ownership of Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers will now have to find a new manager.

It is a shame as the progress that she had made was strong and she could have two league titles had the results been different.

Potter will no doubt move on with well wishes from the Gers board and supporters, and many will keep an eye out for her new adventure.
