Rangers news round-up: Thelwell readies £9m transfer as Coady update emerges

Rangers have begun pre-season training ahead of their upcoming campaign, and plenty of work is being done behind the scenes.

Russell Martin will hope to add some new faces to the squad he inherited as he aims to start his tenure in Glasgow on a positive note.

Rangers have been linked with a number of players across several positions this summer, with a full squad rebuild needed after a dismal season.

With that in mind, Ibrox News rounds up all the latest stories from Glasgow, with one new signing now seemingly close.

Robin Propper to decide future with Martin

Robin Propper was one of Rangers’ worst performers last season, and could be set to bring his time in Scottish football to an end.

The 31-year-old is in talks over a return to Dutch side FC Twente, but his exit is not yet certain as he has returned to pre-season training.

It has been reported that Martin will hold face-to-face talks with Propper over his future before any exit is sanctioned, but it is expected that the new manager will continue the process of cutting ties with the centre-back.

Aaron Ramsdale deal mooted

Rangers are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, and a shock reunion between Martin and Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been mooted.

Ramsdale is set to leave Southampton after their relegation from the Premier League, and Darren Bent has now highlighted the possibility of the England international leaving England to join Rangers.

While a deal is unlikely, the prospect of potentially landing a goalkeeper of Ramsdale’s quality is an exciting one and it may only be somewhat possible because of Martin.

Rangers told to pay £9 million for Flynn Downes

Rangers have been linked with Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes, with Martin said to be a huge fan of the 26-year-old.

With Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande both linked with exits, Downes could be one of a few central midfielders targeted this summer.

It is claimed that Southampton will start the bidding for Downes at around £9m, but this could rise as they paid £15m to sign him from West Ham last summer, and Kevin Thelwell could now make an ambitious move for the Englishman.

Conor Coady deal edging closer

Rangers have been in talks with Leicester City defender Conor Coady over a move this summer, following their relegation from the Premier League.

Talks are said to have been positive, and a deal could actually be tied up in the coming days, with the former Liverpool, Everton and Wolves defender keen on a move to Ibrox.

The 32-year-old will bring a lot of experience, but some are sceptical over another ageing player moving to Rangers after several disastrous signings in the past.
