Martin ‘to convince Ramsdale to join Rangers’ after Southampton exit news

Russell Martin could use his Southampton connections to bring Aaron Ramsdale to Scotland.

Martin declared his interest in signing Southampton goalkeeper Ramsdale earlier this summer.

And the Gers have been handed a major boost in their pursuit after an exit update from south of the border.

Rangers and Galatasaray are battling to sign Ramsdale on loan

Southampton suffered relegation from the Premier League last season after sacking Martin.

The Saints will now need to offload players to balance the books before their season in the Championship begins. Southampton had initially shown reluctance to sell Ramsdale, who was arguably the shining light of their dreadful Premier League season.

However, talkSPORT reports (23 June) that the goalkeeper will now be allowed to leave St Mary’s on loan. Galatasaray and Rangers are both credited with an interest in Southampton’s highest-paid player, who earns more than £100,000-per-week.

Ramsdale is also aiming to play his way back into the England fold before next summer’s World Cup, and playing at Ibrox may give him the chance to impress Thomas Tuchel.

Although Galatasaray are also interested, the chance to reunite with Martin could convince Ramsdale to head to Scotland rather than Turkey.

Ramsdale signing would be a huge upgrade

Ramsdale conceded a lot of goals as Southampton were relegated with a whimper last season.

However, that’s hardly the keeper’s fault. He was the Saints’ best player in many of these matches, making outstanding saves that prevented his team from losing by even more goals.

The Englishman is a fantastic shot-stopper and would be joining a Rangers side where there’s some doubt over who the number one is.

Jack Butland was dropped halfway through last season to be replaced by Liam Kelly, although he was reinstated for the last two games of the campaign. There’s every chance that Martin believes Ramsdale is more reliable than both of these shot-stoppers.

It was Martin who signed Ramsdale for the Saints, and a reunion could now be on the cards.
