Alan Brazil sends Rangers dig after new text messages live on air

Rangers have already set their sights on catching Celtic, hoping to finally overhaul them again in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers may have been miles off their rivals last season, but the takeover at Ibrox by Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers could change everything.

There is plenty of ambition from the new American investors, but pushing Celtic off top spot will be a real marker of how far they have progressed.

Alan Brazil, however, is not keen on the idea of Rangers getting anywhere near the top again.

Brazil digs at Rangers threat

There is plenty of work to be done at Ibrox this summer.

The new investors may have more money to splash on Russell Martin’s side, but the Gers are yet to make a signing after Lyall Cameron.

With pre-season underway, though, we will surely see movement in Glasgow soon enough as the new manager gets a good idea of what is necessary to push his squad forward.

Progression at Ibrox will have to be a slow process too and there is no guarantee that the Light Blues will rise straight to the top in their first season.

Rangers need to close the gap with Celtic.

It’s all about steps forward, instead, and Martin needs to prove he has what it takes to guide his squad in the right direction.

Brazil, however, thinks they can dream on.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (24 June, 8:15am), Ray Parlour admitted: “I’m looking forward to them next year, Rangers and Celtic. It could be interesting.”

Brazil was quick to hit back, though, as he replied: “I’ve got loads of texts and emails like we’re going to win it, we’re catching you. Yeah, alright.”

Parlour was quick to poke fun at his co-host as he said: “What price is Celtic next year?”

However, the Celtic fan made his feelings known as he said: “I don’t know, but save your money, save your money mate. You don’t want to be backing Rangers.”

Rangers must show progression

Brazil’s response, which quickly shut down Parlour’s discussions of Rangers’ success next season, possibly highlights the anxiety that rival supporters have of the Gers’ growth.

Those at Ibrox must focus on themselves for now, though, ensuring that they are showing signs of steady progress under the new regime.

There is no pressure on Martin to deliver a trophy immediately, but there have to be signs of serious improvement with indicators that the Light Blues can return to the top as soon as possible.

Rangers won’t want to wait too long before getting their hands on the Scottish Premiership once more, though, with dominance needed back at Ibrox.
