49ers ‘take massive Rangers risk’ as decision made on £4.5m Dessers bid

Cyriel Dessers’ future could be determined in the next 48 hours amid a new update shared on the Rangers striker.

The Nigeria international has been linked with a number of clubs in the early stages of the summer transfer window.

AEK Athens are the side most serious about signing Dessers, with reports emerging in the past few days of a bid being lodged.

Further news has now been shared on that offer, and the decision taken by 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh could prove a major gamble.

Rangers reject AEK Athens bid for Dessers

It is a rarity in recent windows for Rangers to be offered large sums for a player, but that has proved the case – relatively speaking – for Dessers.

According to the Daily Record (24 June), Greek giants AEK tabled a £4.5million offer that was rejected by Rangers on Monday (23 June).

The report adds that AEK will move onto other targets if they are unable to reach a breakthrough with Rangers in the next 24-48 hours.

That means the Gers’ new owners risk missing out on a pretty sizeable sum for Dessers, as AEK are surely unlikely to come in with an improved offer for the striker.

Dessers exit would split Rangers fanbase

It was not so long ago that many used Dessers as one of the main factors behind Rangers’ plight in recent times.

The man tasked with leading the line missed more chances that he scored goals, but he proved his doubters wrong by finishing top scorer in the Scottish Premiership last season.

Dessers has impressed for both Rangers and Nigeria, so keeping hold of the striker makes sense heading into this new era under Russell Martin.

At the same time, £4.5m is a decent sum of money to go towards one or two other players.

On the basis of this update, though, and the initial bid being rejected, it looks as though the 49ers and Cavenagh do not believe there is a better option out there for the same price.

If that is their decision, it is one that has to be respected.
