James Tavernier ‘set for new Rangers role’ after Max Aarons transfer agreement

Rangers look set to sign Max Aarons from Bournemouth, which could potentially have an effect on James Tavernier at Ibrox.

The Gers captain has had his critics among fans over the years, and it looks like Kevin Thelwell is about to address those concerns.

Aarons could soon move to Ibrox on a season-long loan after struggling for game time at the Cherries and during his temporary stint at Valencia.

Russell Martin trusts Tavernier to be the Glaswegian outfit’s captain ahead of next season after being appointed as the new manager, but his role may soon change.

Rangers to use Tavernier sparingly after Aarons transfer

Tavernier could potentially see his role diminish at the Gers after Aarons’ signing, Michael Gannon says.

The Daily Record journalist doesn’t expect the 33-year-old Englishman to be sold and expects him to see out the year left in his contract at Ibrox.

However, Gannon shared the possibility of the veteran right-back being used sparingly in the upcoming campaign after the addition of the Bournemouth defender.

Tavernier’s record at the Gers last season.

Speaking on Game On (20 June), the journalist said:”[Tavernier] has got a year left. I think he’ll be around for the year.

“You’ve got to think that’s the area of the pitch they’re looking at, it does suggest to me that Tavernier could be used more sparingly next season.”

Martin should trust Aarons to start over Tavernier

Tavernier has been a loyal servant at Ibrox for years, but it has been evident for some time that the Gers need a replacement for him.

Supporters have been calling for the 33-year-old’s role in the starting lineup to diminish last season, but injury issues in the squad forced Barry Ferguson and Philippe Clement to rely on him.

While it wouldn’t make sense to sell the English defender this summer, considering the lack of depth already in the Light Blues’ backline, he can’t be a starter.

Rangers could soon have Aarons at their disposal, and despite it being a loan, Martin has the opportunity to see whether he can be a long-term fit for them.

The 25-year-old hasn’t been able to showcase his abilities in recent months, but those who saw the defender during his Norwich City days know he can contribute a lot at Ibrox.

Dujon Sterling was expected to pip Tavernier in the pecking order last season, but his consistent fitness issues have been frustrating for fans.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Gets wanting to sign the Bournemouth star permanently next summer if he lives up to expectations in Glasgow, but how his situation unfolds remains to be seen.
